Twisted Tales | Creative Writing Competition 11-18 Years

Write a mini saga, a story told in just 100 words, from the villain’s point of view.

There are lots of villains to choose from, such as ‘classic’ fictional characters to Disney or Marvel, but we’d like to suggest exploring villains from other cultures…

  • Legend says the Night Marchers were ancient Hawaiian warriors. Today, their spirits roam various areas on the islands, including sacred places & battlefields. They appear as ghostly apparitions who carry torches and play drums while they chant. Anyone who lays eyes on them dies…
  • Edward “Blackbeard” Teach was the most notorious pirate of his generation, terrorizing the Caribbean and the British American coast. He was tall, with a long, matted black beard, which he weaved candle wicks into, to light them in battle, engulfing himself in foul smoke so his victims believed he was a demon escaped from Hell.
  • Krampus is a horned creature with human traits and originates from Alpine folklore. In December it scares any children who have misbehaved, assisting Saint Nicholas, who rewards the good children with gifts.
  • The Gjenganger is from Scandinavian folklore dating back to Viking times. This spirit rose after death to conclude unfinished business and tormented families with violence and the ‘dead man’s pinch’ spreading diseases.
  • Papa Legba is a Haitian Voudou and is seen as a young trickster deity or as an old man with a cane. He stands at a spiritual crossroads and gives or denies permission to speak with the spirits of Guinee, and can swap humans’ souls.
