Welcome to the BIG BANG SCIENCE DAY at Bosworth Academy
Your day with us will be packed with exciting hands-on scientific experiments, in Biology, Chemistry & Physics, you’ll make scientific discoveries using the very best laboratory equipment, and learn more about the fascinating world of science, and importantly you’ll have great fun.
Our highly experienced and specialist science teaching staff led by Mrs Vicky Kirkham will be guiding you through a series of experiments and demonstrations which will help to bring to life the science you’ve been learning at your Primary School at your own school, and to give you an insight into how great science is!
Not only will you be doing science but you’ll also have the opportunity to play in our outstanding sports dome, and enjoy the great choice of food served in our canteen.
What we do on Big Bang Science Day at Bosworth Academy?
Flame Tests
We’ll see how fireworks are made and why they are different colours. We’ll perform scientific tests and recorded the results. Then we’ll use those results to meet an order at the ‘Bosworth Fireworks Factory’!
Changing States of Matter
Solids, liquids and gases are the three states of matter, and can change from one state to another by heating or cooling. We’ll see how liquid nitrogen can freeze different objects (like balloons or rubber gloves) and what happens to them when they do!
Microscopy
We’ll use microscopes that magnified objects to 100 times their actual size.
(If people were 100 times their actual size, they would be as tall as the ‘Gherkin’ building in London!) We’ll look at plant and animal cells under a light microscope. We are investigating the basic units of life!
Reversible Reactions
Chemical reactions are either reversible (like melting or dissolving) or irreversible, like burning. You can’t change a cooked egg back into a raw one! We’ll see that reversible reactions might change how a material looks or feels, but it doesn’t
create new materials. And we’ll learn the experimental skills to reverse a reaction.
