Bosworth Academy students and staff are celebrating another fantastic set of A Level results.

On one of the most nerve wracking days of their academic career so far; and the culmination of 14 years of study and three years of seemingly endless exams students achieved an overall pass rate of 99.6% with nearly three quarters of entries at the top A* – C grades.

“A-level results day is arguably one of the most pivotal days in a young adults life.” Chris Parkinson, the Academy Principal, said “The progress made by these students has been better than ever, and as a result more Bosworth Academy students will be accessing courses at top UK universities including Cambridge.”

These amazing results reflect one of the Academy’s core values ‘Be better than you thought you could be’. By challenging, encouraging and motivating students the teaching staff are justifiably proud to have supported students to achieve more than they thought they could; and have helped to provide a firm education foundation, and a love for learning which they will carry forward to university, or into their future careers.

The effort made by the students, and the dedication and support given by the staff were recognised at the A Level Results Celebration held at the Academy.

Particular recognition should go to Chantelle Caines who secured a highly sought after place to read Medicine at The University of Cambridge with 3 A* grades at A Level and Frazer Alcock on achieving two A* grades and one A, who is going to The University of Cambridge to read Engineering. We are equally proud of Greg Jones and James Maund who each achieved outstanding results of four A* grades and are going to read Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London and Mathematics at The University of Warwick respectively.

If the results are to be collected by a friend or family member, a signed letter of consent from the student is essential.

AS/A Level Results Information

If your results are not quite what you’d hoped for, come and make an appointment. A member of the Post 16 team will be available to see you on Thursday 13th, Friday 14th or Wednesday 19th August.

Appointments must be made by telephoning the Academy on Thursday 13th or Friday 14th August between 9.30am – 1pm.

A reminder for Year 12 students moving into Year 13, you need to have a minimum of two E grades overall and to have a pass in any subject you wish to continue at A2.

Welcome to Bosworth Academy for our third annual Saturday Learning Carnival, which takes place Saturday 20th June 2015 at 10am-1pm. If this is your first time at Bosworth, I hope you will leave having had an enjoyable and informative day; most of all I hope you get a real sense of our passion for learning and our commitment to make a difference. For those who know us already, I’m sure you will get an impression of how much we have changed and developed over the last few years.
Please take the time to talk to our staff and students as you walk around on the day and if you have any questions make sure you get them answered before you leave. We are proud of the service which we provide for our community and are delighted to see you.

Laureates: The Laureates is the first stage of the journey at Bosworth Academy, catering for students aged 11-14. The specially selected team of tutors are based in the Laureates Area. Come down and meet the team who will be ready to answer any questions you may have and explain the application process. Kathleen Baxter Head of the Laureates Key Stage 4: Years 10 and 11 (KS4) are a vital part of the journey at Bosworth Academy, as it is during these years where GCSEs are completed. Throughout the day you will have a chance to experience the wide range of subjects that are on offer at KS4, together with the innovative and engaging teaching that KS4 encompasses. Students, teachers and parents are supported by the Maximising Learning Team (MLT), through an excellent tutoring and pastoral system, and they will be available throughout the morning to field any queries. Ben White Head of Key Stage 4 Sixth Form: Pop down to the Oaks to see the study facilities we have in the sixth form. Have a chat with current students about their experience at Bosworth and meet the team of Year Heads. There will also be a presentation in the Oaks to give guidance on planning for the future. Year 12:
Students are expected to attend timetabled lessons until the last exam in that subject. From this date lessons will be coded as appropriate by the attendance team. They should still continue lessons for subjects they have yet to complete. Morning preparation for an afternoon exam may be permitted by the tutor and should be coded by the tutor.

For BTEC courses, completion dates will be decided by the teacher on submission of work of the highest possible standard.

Year 13 courses for current Year 12 students will begin week commencing on Monday 08/06/15. All exams will have then finished except for a very small number of students who will be coded appropriately.

Morning preparation for an afternoon exam may be permitted by the tutor and should be coded by the tutor.

Students are expected to attend ALL timetabled classes.

Year 13:
Normal timetabled lessons will finish on 22/5/15 but students should continue to attend timetabled lessons until their final exam in that subject. Attendance is not required upon completion of all exams.

Bosworth Academy believes it is vital to engage young people in politics and the political process. This is ever more vital when there is a possibility that the voting age may be reduced and conceivably all our students will be eligible to vote in the 2020 General Election. Similarly, a lack of political understanding, and sophistication leads young people to be naively swayed by simplistic, easily understandable yet extremist philosophies; it is our responsibility to fight extremism of all persuasions wherever it exists. At the same time, we have a responsibility to do this without showing party political bias and recognising our societies deeply held values of democracy and free speech.
In the last few weeks we have had visits from Chris Keely, the Labour party candidate for Hinckley and Bosworth, and David Tredennick who is our sitting conservative MP and seeking re-election. They were both impressed by our desire to inspire young people with politics, and supportive of our approach.
Over the coming weeks we will be running filmed student hustings and talking to our young people in assembly and tutor time about the political process. We will be seeking students’ views in a controlled and responsible way on the key issues which will affect them as they move through education and the adult world.

On 11th February 2015, we took twenty-one Year 12 students to visit Corpus Christi College at the University of Cambridge. The purpose of the trip was to give our students a taste of life as a University of Cambridge student as well as providing them with crucial advice on how to be a successful candidate in the rigorous application process to Oxbridge.

We arrived at the historic College (founded in 1352) and were given a session on ‘Applying to Cambridge’ by Dr Nicki Humphrey-Baker. Students were given a detailed insight into the lengthy application process and were given excellent advice on how to become a successful candidate. With our Year 12 students beginning the UCAS process later on this year, this talk was invaluable at giving our potential Oxbridge candidates the grades required and skills they need to develop in order to become an Oxbridge undergraduate.

Lunch was taken in the magnificent dining hall before the students broke off into smaller groups for a guided tour around the College by current Cambridge undergraduates. Here, they had the opportunity to see some of the most spectacular buildings as well as ask questions of their tour guide. The groups reconvened for a more formal question and answer session with the 5 Corpus Christi students (a geographer, an historian, a geologist, a philosopher and a computer scientist), where we could find out a students perspective of studying at Cambridge as well as the work required to attain a place.

The day finished with a taster lecture from Dr Richard McMahon from the University of Cambridge Engineering Department who provided a stimulating session on Renewable Energy sources. The Bosworth Academy representatives showed exceptional enthusiasm and answered the questions posed of them with confidence and accuracy.

This was a very rewarding trip for both staff and students alike. The invaluable information has given our students, not just a better idea as to how to apply for Oxbridge courses, but to university life in general. Our students left Corpus Christi with an improved appetite to ‘be better than they thought they could be’ and has motivated many of them to consider applying for Oxbridge courses this Autumn. As always, the Year 12 students represented the Academy with pride and distinction, and are a credit to this institute.
